I Adore Chopin, But I'm Addicted to The Chainsmokers

I have a little confession to make.

Some days, I'm spamming away hits from The Chainsmokers on YouTube like there's no tomorrow...

Look, stop judging me. They're really, really catchy, okay?

Some nights, I close my eyes and let my mind drift peacefully to the soft melodies of Chopin...

What a contradiction of music taste, hm? No, not really.

I do NOT adore NOR am addicted to selfies

Addiction Without Reason

Yes, I'm addicted to The Chainsmokers. I can spam 'Selfie' on repeat over and over again shamelessly.

But why? No idea. Maybe it's the electro beats - invoking some tribal spirit in us. Maybe it's the tuneless rambling - so out of sync, yet oddly hypnotizing like a ritualistic chant.

Some things we're addicted to, but we can't explain why. And there's no point rationalising. Our brain is hooked, and gets the body grooving along and gravitating to it.

All we can do is to let it be. Give up, don't fight it. So long as your craving isn't damaging your physical or mental health, please don't stop the music.

Some addictions have no rhyme nor reason. So just let it play, and nod along.

Addiction Is Not Adoration

But does it mean I'm a big fan of The Chainsmokers? That I'll rush to their live sets if they're down in town? That I'll hang posters of them on my wall?

Of course not. Addiction isn't the same as adoration.

I have very few music idols - Nirvana, Beattles, Pitbull (just kidding!) and yes, Chopin...

I absolutely adore classical music. I grew up listening to it, as a kid. And then typical of a rebellious teen spirit, I fell to the dark side of rock.

Now that I'm older (and wiser), I'm falling back in love with the lull of the piano.

True, I don't listen to classical as much as pop or electro these days. But that doesn't mean I like it any less.

In fact, some of the best things in life are enjoyed sparingly, not spammingly. (Okay, 'spammingly' isn't really a word - but it is now!)

Less is more. Quality over quantity. Blah blah blah... You get the idea...

Cooler than Chopin

The Magic Of Music

Don't be misled by the title (admittedly rather click-bait-ish).

Obviously, Chopin and The Chainsmokers aren't my favourite musicians of all time.

I love all types of music - pop, electro, rock, R&B, classical, jazz, and more...

I love Broadway musicals and instrumental orchestras.

I love head-banging to Nirvana and salsa-ing to Despacito.

The magic of music - as in life - lies in its rich diversity. The spectrum is wide. The varieties are countless.

Right now, I'm addicted to The Chainsmokers, but I'll still adore Chopin.
